CARING FOR the WORLD and EACH OTHER

BeFrienders are trained lay volunteers who extend the care of the St. John’s faith community. Who are the people who need a BeFriender? Maybe it is an elderly person who is homebound or in a nursing home. Maybe it is a single parent struggling with raising children or a person living with a chronic illness. Perhaps it is an unemployed head of household weary from job hunting or a new mom adjusting to caring for a baby. Telecare is St. John’s telephone ministry that provides continuous support to all member families by providing meaningful contact with each congregational household in a ten-month period. Calls are made on behalf of the pastoral staff to become aware of any life changes occurring in the life of a St. John’s member. Callers will not ask for time or money but will simply let you know they care about you, ask how things are going or if you have prayer concerns to be passed on to St. John’s pastors and office staff. Wedding Coordinators gather for the purpose of assisting wedding couples and the pastoral staff during the wedding ceremony. They do this for weddings for which they are assigned. JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL ACTIVITIES

Thrive participants gather for the purpose of building relationships with God and each other through intentional small groups. MINISTRY TEAMS, COMMITTEES and BOARDS

Adult Discipleship Ministry Team provides opportunities for Christian discipleship, spiritual formation, and adult education at St. John’s. Their goal is to help members grow in faith so they become more committed and passionate disciples of Jesus. Areas of responsibility include programs for Sunday morning Bible studies, small groups, spiritual gifts discovery, retreats, and special events. Charitable Trust Board is an elected board whose members oversee management of the funds in the Charitable Trust, determine funding allocations, and promote joining the Legacy Society. The board meets three times a year. Contact Tom Shadid, tomshadid@yahoo.com, (309) 838-6992. T  

Columbarium Association Board of Directors operate a ministry within St. John’s Lutheran Church for the inurnment of cremains in niches within our Memorial Garden. The Association is an Illinois not-for-profit corporation, filing and paying fees yearly, listing board members to continue this ministry, under Illinois rules and regulations. It operates with a set of bylaws, rules, and regulations under the auspices of the Congregational Council, with a separate checking account. Constitution Committee gathers to review the church constitution and consider any changes. They meet at various times throughout the year on an as-needed basis. Contact Chris Magnuson, cmagnuson@ilfb.org, (309) 825-6018. T 

Finance Committee members oversee the financial affairs of the congregation to make sure that they are being conducted effectively, giving particular attention to the prompt payment of obligations and to the regular forwarding of benevolence monies to the synod treasurer. The Finance Committee prepares a budget for each year, including the congregation’s full indicated share in support of the wider ministry for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) and the synod. The budget is submitted to the congregation council for its action and later presentation at a congregational meeting. Areas of responsibility include congregational investments and the insurance program. This team provides quarterly reviews of funds spent/available to each team and detailed reports to council as requested. The congregational treasurer is the council liaison. Guest Experience Team members’ responsibilities include the Welcome Center, greeters, hospitality ministries, and new member involvement in the church. Joy Zone Children’s Ministry Team connects children, birth through fifth grade, to the heart of Jesus through intentional, relational, and fun programming. They work in partnership with the parents to enthusiastically support the children in their spiritual growth. This team aims to be visible to the entire congregation and perpetuate the Engage and Equip People to Embrace Jesus Christ mission of St. John’s. We intend for all programming to be relevant to the lives of children so they can live out their faith in practical ways throughout the week. A strong emphasis is placed on mission opportunities, locally and internationally, by educating parents and children. Areas of responsibility include provisions for families of children from birth to 24 months, nursery, Joy Zone Sunday morning programs for early childhood and elementary school-aged children, Bible presentation and classes, First Communion instruction, Joy Zone summer programs, and Vacation Bible School. Local Missions Ministry Team helps transform faith into action by responding to human and spiritual needs of the community and involves and coordinates the congregation in local ministry opportunities, such as affordable housing, homeless shelters, and food pantries. Nominating Committee members are responsible for developing a slate of candidates for council elections as well as other elected roles at St. John’s. Open Door Missions Team members coordinate adult short-term mission trips and supports the global ministries of the congregation. Parish Life Ministry Team members extend Christian compassion and concern to congregational members in need of support and encouragement, such as during times of hospitalization, grief, loss, birth, relocation, inactivity in the congregation, and other transitions.   Areas of responsibility include the prayer chain, Caregivers. This ministry team oversees fellowship groups within the congregation such as Sunday morning refreshments and meals for Heritage Sunday, and Easter. Property Committee members maintain and protect all congregational property and provide a safe environment for our members and guests. Responsibilities include keeping updated facility use guidelines and recommendations for long-range capital improvement projects. Risk Management Team members gather for the purpose of policy or procedure review to ensure that the church isn’t exposed to undue risk, harm, or legal action. Stewardship Ministry Team members gather for the purpose of coordinating activities and events at St. John’s that encourage members toward giving their time, talents, and tithes in adoration of our Lord and Savior. Youth Ministry Board is a group of youth and adults, whose purpose is to advise, plan, vision, and run the Youth Ministry at St. John’s. This group also prays together, sponsors fellowship events for the community, and leads Bible studies. They meet monthly to plan meetings, events, and ministries and have their own retreat to conduct training sessions for its members. Worship Arts Ministry Team collaborates with the pastoral and music staff to support the worship life of St. John’s congregation and includes volunteer worship ministries for each service as needed, such as acolytes, choirs, bands, communion preparation and assistants, worship planning teams, visual arts, lectors, readers, parament care, music ministries, and ushers. They help to plan special services and seasonal events including: Heritage Sunday, Midweek Advent, Lenten services, Holy Week, Easter, and Christmas Eve worship. MISSIONS, CHRIST IN THE WORLD

Ecuador Missions Team members gather each year on a monthly basis, March through July, for the purpose of spiritual growth in relation to global mission, cultural indoctrination, team relationship building, in-country task-related assignments, and expectations in preparation for the annual Ecuador missions trips.  Faith in Action provides spiritual, physical, and emotional support to seniors 60 years and over and their caregivers to maintain independence, dignity, and improved quality of life. Habitat for Humanity volunteers gather for the purpose of providing safe and affordable housing for families through volunteer labor and donations. They meet at housing construction sites from 8 AM to noon on Saturdays throughout the year. Contact Marvin Rasch, (309) 585-0930. C

Love Packages is an organization which packs and ships Christian materials to countries throughout the world. The role of this team is to take the materials to Love Packages when there is a car full. Contact Larry Eggan, leggan@ilstu.edu, (309) 452-7495. T

Lutheran World Relief supporters meet as needed to pack quilts and school and personal care kits to be shared with people in need throughout the world. The work culminates in our large Ingathering on the last Saturday in October when volunteers pack a semi-truck full of donations from St. John’s and other regional Lutheran churches. Quilters Group meets for the purpose of making quilts for Lutheran World Relief. The quilts are sent all over the world for those people facing disasters or economic problems. Many of our quilters sew at home zig-zagging edges, sewing backs blocks together. Quilters meet from 9:30-11:30 AM two to three Tuesday mornings a month in the Fellowship Hall (340). Work Camp is a service ministry program during the summer. Senior high youth and adults spend a week in community doing service ministries for residents of a community. The group joins other youth and adults—living together in a school—and work at homes during the day and share meals in fellowship, devotions, prayer, and Bible studies during the week. The Work Camp community meets monthly from November to July in preparation for this ministry and has fundraisers throughout the year. Decorators gather for the purpose of beautifying the worship spaces for special worship services and holiday seasons, including seasonal flowers. SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL ACTIVITIES 

CHAOS Wednesdays gathers at 6:45 PM every Wednesday in the Fellowship Hall. This Senior High Youth Group meets in Christian fellowship for Bible study, discussing faith topics, participating in shared prayer and service ministry. Ignite Small Group members meet every other week on either Wednesday or Sunday nights. Groups meet during the school year. Small groups have six to nine teens with two adult shepherd leaders. Groups either meet in the homes or at the church. This ministry creates small Christian communities from within the larger youth community to foster strong mentoring relationships with faith-filled adults, to study the Bible, and share in prayer, service ministry, and fellowship. Leadership Lab is a group of senior high youth that participates in a week-long Christian leadership training at Augustana College in July. SOCIAL 

DinnerTime participants gather to connect children, youth, and adults, helping all to grow in their faith while building up our family in Christ over a delicious meal. People of all ages are welcome. DinnerTime is open invitation, so come each week or just when your family is free. Registration is not required! DinnerTime will meet 5:30–6:30 PM the first, second, and third Wednesdays of the month (except for the first Wednesday in January). The cost for the meal is $3 per person or a maximum of $15 per family. Lunch Bunch is a social group for St. John’s singles, ages 60 and over, who enjoy meeting new people, making new friends, and dining out. Prime Timers is a social group of adults, ages 55 and over, who enjoy getting together bi-monthly for fun and fellowship. The group is open to couples and singles who enjoy meeting good people and making new friends. The six events per year are planned by small groups of volunteers and include dinners in restaurants or homes, theater, picnics, game nights, and a variety of other events. Band

Ushers gather to provide assistance to the pastoral staff in ensuring that the worship services run smoothly. They serve as greeters for the service when passing out the Weekly News. They collect the offering and clean up the Parish Life Center after worship so that the next group will have a clean worship space. Ushers collect the pew pad information sheets and see that the offering receipts are deposited in the bank. There are teams made up of several individuals which are scheduled to usher periodically throughout the year. They meet at 9:15–11 AM or 10:30 AM – 12:15 PM on assigned Sundays.
