The Dirt On the Building Process

July 28th, 2009 Comments off

A time to break down, and a time to build up;   Eccl 3:3b (NRSV)

Yesterday had breaking down, drilling down, digging down, and building up!  Lots of dirt being moved, lots of dirt.  Yes, all in a day and the work continues.

Wells and being dug for our new geothermal systems, the area east of the Parish Life Center is being excavated for the new building, higher burms and being created for rainwater collection and all kinds of stuff are happening inside the Fellowship Hall.  Take a look at all the outside progress!

SALT: THR, Work as Kings

July 23rd, 2009 Comments off

All day the group spent serving in Freeport, IL and right now the group is
off preparing for our cookout of Foil Dinners.

We spent today helping pass out flyers at homes and doing litter cleanup
in a couple neighborhoods.  The organization we served helps
those in financial trouble become homeowners as well as providing those in need
with loans to improve their houses.

After putting flyers in doors and doing litter sweeps we were treated to a
pizza lunch at a beautiful park in Freeport.  We continued our task after
lunch and then were treated to ice cream by the Mayor of Freeport!

After the hour drive back to LOMC we are ready to eat again and the group
is gathering firewood and preparing food for our meal.  Eat, eat and eat again
today.

Tonight is closing campfire and guess what… more pizza!  Geez.  We also
hope tonight to share scripture verses that we picked and memorized and will share
pizza with another group of campers in the Voyager group.

Tomorrow morning we cookout again, eggs and bacon or breakfast burittos
(can’t remember which) and then pack as much as we can in before lunch
at 12:15.  We’ll get on the road around 1:30pm and be back to church around
3:45pm!  Can’t wait to see everyone.

Sorry, no time for pictures today!  You’ll all just have to wait for the SALT DVDs
to come out.

SALT: WED is Wet But in a Good Way!

July 22nd, 2009 Comments off

An early update since we’ll be busy tonight so…

A little cloudy this morning but what a beautiful day it has been!  We enjoyed eggs and bacon AND toast and then headed to Morning Devotions up near the old barn.  This morning we ventured onto the Rock River for a half-day canoe trip.  Last year the trip was cancelled due to
flooding in the Rock River but this year everything was a go!  A picnic lunch was
enjoyed at our pickup place, games were played and then we headed back for
some rest and relaxation up at our Retreat Houses.

Right now the group is enjoying swimming in the pool and dinner will be here soon!
While some were swimming, five of us delivered Kermit the Frogs to the beds of the
Early Ventures (the youngest campers at LOMC this week, 1st-3rd graders).
Boy will they be surprised to find a special gift for each of them sometime tonight!

This evening we will enjoy some Bible study time, snacks and campfire.  Tonight is also special because we take the 8th graders into town for a chance to socialize and talk about their opportunities in high school the following summer.

Tomorrow is service work in Freeport, IL helping with some community cleanup and
flyer posting.  We are having a great time!!!

SALT: Tue, Wet and Full of Faith

July 21st, 2009 Comments off

It’s been a very rainy day here at LOMC!  We had a cool and cloudy 2 mile hike to Castle Rock State Park and as we neared the picnic shelter it… rained.  And rained and rained and rainer.  It’s still raining now at 9:00pm.  Thankfully Mr. Rob was able to be driven back to camp to get the bus so that we didn’t have to walk back in the rain.  After returning from our hike we hung out in our Retreat Houses, looked for our favorite Bible verses, wrote thank-yous to troops over seas and even still had pool time.  This evening we enjoyed a great Bible study and played another game of “Four On A Couch.”  Tomorrow should be drier… we pray.

July 20th, 2009 Comments off

Our first full day at LOMC and it was full of activity!  Morning devotions, Crate Stacking, Team Building games, pond canoeing with our littlest campers (service project today), pool time, bible study, snacks, and right now the campers are off to campfire up at Meadows Village.

Everyone is having a great time and what a great group!  You’re getting two posts on Monday since Rob fixed LOMC’s Internet connection this morning!  People really love their Internet and we’re happy to share some of what we’re up to along with a few photos.

SALT: We’ve Arrived!

July 20th, 2009 Comments off

We made it safe and sound to LOMC around 3:30pm yesterday (Sunday).  It’s a very BUSY week at LOMC so we had a little wait to get through registration but the weather is great and everyone is ready to dive into a week filled with service and camping events.

Timbers is our home away from home for the week and Moose, Andrea and Alyssa (a St. John’s member and summer counselor) are leading us throughout the week.  Rob and Kirk are doing well but wondering why they aren’t staying in the “koosh” Freedom Tree Village.

We’ve learned each others’ names, hiked around a bit, created a group covenant and even created a nickname for the group: H1N1.  Yes, Swine Flu.  We get noticed, we’re deadly serious about sharing God’s love through service and OK we have no idea why we came up with that name.  Second choice was Holy Cheese.  You figure it out.

Until the next update… God bless!

Wall Down, Studs Up

July 15th, 2009 Comments off

It’s been almost two weeks since an update.  We’ve had Cave Camp so it was a little hard to get Net access underground but we’re back and here’s a new progress report.

  • Part of a wall in upper Fellowship Hall is down for the creation of a new serving window.
  • Duct work is here for installation of heating and cooling.
  • Metal stud-work is up all over the Noah’s Ark area.
  • Some plumbing work has been done.
  • Demo work has been done to the concrete patio entrance and a new deck will be poured within the week.
