King of Pop Meets Luther
A sad day for many of us who grew up in the 80’s. MJ gone at 50 years of age. Michael Jackson is the King of Pop and I still remember being in 7th grade and walking the halls of Jefferson Jr. High School asking (and being asked) if I had seen the Thriller video. Michael was epic in those days. Michael was amazing in those days. Michael was cutting edge and powerful and it seemed as if EVERYBODY loved his music (I think I still have Thriller on tape somewhere). One of my favorite songs is “Man in the Mirror.”
I’m Starting With The Man In The Mirror
I’m Asking Him To Change His Ways
And No Message Could Have Been Any Clearer
If You Wanna Make The World A Better Place
Take A Look At Yourself, And Then Make A Change
(Man in the Mirror by Siedah Garrett, Glen Ballard, Michael Jackson, 1988)
Oddly enough Martin Luther had a similar thought, oh, say a few years before MJ. Luther said about what Baptism is for us, “It means that our sinful self, with all its evil deeds and desires, should be drowned through daily repentance; and that day after day a new self should arise to live with God in righteousness and purity forever.”
You don’t look in the mirror once, you look every day. Every day is a struggle to relflect on our weaknesses and in Christ, live a life worthy of our baptism. So here’s to Michael Jackson and to Martin Luther. Let’s live in Grace and by Faith affect some change!
