Go Deeper
It had been a long night on the lake, and
they had nothing to show for it. Simon (Peter), James and John
washed their nets, knowing that no fish meant
no income, wondering what the next night would bring. Like most
people in Galilee, they lived day to day, fish to fish,
without a safety net. Simon had family, a mother-in-law at
home, and I imagine it was hard to walk in his door empty-handed.
But then Jesus showed up and showed Simon a kind of prosperity
that had nothing to do with fish, even though his nets ended up
nearly bursting with fins and scales. Jesus asked Simon to go deeper: "Put out into the
deep water and let down your nets for a catch." (Luke 5:4b) And
despite his skepticism (and maybe even despair), Simon trusted Jesus
and was shown a sign of abundance that would help him drop his
fishing nets and start following Jesus as he let down the nets of
God's grace and mercy.
Has it been a long week? Even amidst
daily joy and gratitude, do you feel the weight of responsibility
around work, health, parenting, relationships, and heavy schedules?
Are you wondering what next week might bring? Jesus' invitation to
us is the same as it was to Simon: go deeper. As we go deeper into the call to do
justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with God, as we go deeper into study of
scripture and prayer, we, too are able to drop the nets of
skepticism and fear that strangle our spirits.
I pray that our worship together this
weekend will help you hear Christ's call
to live generously and gracefully in all that we do
and to trust in a God who gives life and love abundantly. Come and
worship!

quoted as saying, "I don’t want your money, I want your soul. Your
shoe sole, that is!"
