THE BAPTISM OF
JESUS
From the words of the Funeral
Service in our Evangelica l
Lutheran Worship hymnal, we have a section entitled,
"Thanksgiving for
Baptism." In that segment, we are reminded of
being "clothed with
Christ" in baptism. A pall is placed over
the casket and the words of St.
Paul are read: "When we were baptized in Christ Jesus, we
were baptized into his death. We were buried therefore with
him by baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised
from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in
newness of life. For if we have been united with him in a death like
his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like
his." (Romans 6:3-4)
When Jesus was baptized, he didn't do it
by himself. He didn't initiate his own rite. The Bible says that
Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist. In other words, the baptism
of Jesus occurred as part of a tradition of those who had gone
before Him. One of the Core Values here at
St. John's Lutheran Church is that we are a LITURGICAL CHURCH. That
means that our worship comes through a formalized liturgy that has
been a part of this church since the very beginning of the whole
Christian church in the earliest centuries. In our Lutheran
tradition, we take seriously those who have gone before us, as we
share in liturgical worship. That means we are not inventing
worship, as if this is a "new thing." We are not creating an
experience that will just appeal to the mass culture and to those
who are not part of the church. We are not "dumbing down" worship so
that it appeals to everyone but does not speak to anyone. We look at
what Jesus did at his own baptism and discover the truth that
Jesus deliberately chose to follow those who had gone before
him, to enter into John's baptism and to participate in the liturgy
of others. The Gospels record that many people were also going out
to be baptized by John and Jesus chose to be among
them.
Join
us for worship this weekend as we celebrate the Baptism of Jesus and
in doing so, let us affirm our own baptismal relationship with
a God who loves us more than we can possibly know or
imagine.
Remember to join us at
3:00 PM on Sunday,
January 10, 2010, for the Ordination and
Installation of Pastor David O. Bruner into the ministry of Word and
Sacrament of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in
America. Bishop Warren Freiheit will be present
as well as Rev. Bob Sanders (David's father-in-law), from
Portland, Oregon, who will be preaching the sermon. A
special reception will follow in the
Parish Life Center, hosted by our Parish Life Ministry
Team. Please join us and invite a friend!
PRAYER: Almighty God, you anointed
Jesus at his baptism with the Holy Spirit and revealed him as your
beloved Son. Keep all who are born of water and the Spirit
faithful in your service, that we may rejoice to be called children
of God, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and
reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
Amen.
Alive in
Christ,
The Reverend
Knight Wells
