GRACE AND TRUTH

This week I enjoyed studying our Gospel for Sunday, John 1:1-18. It is packed with meaning. John has a unique description of Jesus’ birth. There isn’t a reference to a stable, shepherds, angels or the wise men. Rather, John speaks of the meaning of Jesus’ birth. Verse 14 says, “The Word became flesh and lived among us…full of grace and truth.”St. John's

John 1 has many other powerful passages:

Verse 1 - "In the beginning was the Word" – that’s creation in Genesis

Verse 3"What has come into being in Him was life."

Verse 12 - "But to all who received Him… He gave power to become children of God."

Verse 16 - "From his fullness we have all received grace upon grace."

Sunday we’ll consider grace and truth in verse 14. The emphasis is on grace and truth rather than one at the expense of the other.

Now I want to emphasize verse 3, "What has come into being in Him was life." Life is such a precious gift. I’ve witnessed that this week at ISU. The campus is lifeless because the students are gone. Students rather than buildings make a university. Yet the buildings are important. Our hearts are sad because of the tragic death of a construction worker on Christmas Day.

On Tuesday evening Redbird Arena became alive with the victory over Wichita State University. We blew ‘em out!

Life has many facets. We believe the fullness of life is experienced in Jesus Christ.

PRAYER FOR THE NEW YEAR: Almighty God, you have filled all the earth with the light of your incarnate Word. By your grace empower us to reflect your light in all that we do, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. AMEN.

A blessed new year to you and yours. Please join us for worship.

In Christ,

The Reverend James E. Reents
