WORSHIP THIS THANKSGIVING WEEKEND

Although today is Wednesday and not Friday, God's bleSt. John'sssings are with us each and every day. Let us give thanks to Almighty God for everything that we have, everything that we are, and everything we hope to be. Remember to join us for worship this evening at 7:15 PM in the Sanctuary, as we give thanks to God. "Come, ye thankful people, come; raise the song of harvest home. All be safely gathered in, ere the winter storms begin. God our maker doth provide for our wants to be supplied. Come to God's own temple come, raise the song of harvest home."

This weekend begins the wonderful season of Advent . . . four weeks leading up to Christmas. These are days of preparation and making ready for Jesus to come.  The coming of Jesus is the miracle of miracles. It begins in the smallest, most vulnerable, simple expression of life . . . a newborn child. The Grand Creator of the entire universe enters our world in smallness, in weakness, in hiddeness and in total vulnerability. In so many ways, Advent is the season of hope . . . because it reminds us that the small signs of God's presence are all around us.  Unfortunately, we often ignore them and fail to notice them . . . the smile of a baby, the encouraging arm on a shoulder, the warmth of an embrace by a friend, the gestures of love and concern that are shared over and over again.

God's salvation for us, through Jesus, takes place in a world of noise, bombast, spectacles, power plays and notoriety. In truth, Jesus comes with none of that. Jesus comes to us the exact opposite way. Join us for worship each weekend during the Advent season, as we focus on the "Promises of the Prophets." In addition to our regular weekend schedule, we will also offer mid-week worship services on Wednesdays at 7:15 PM using the beautiful liturgy of Evening Prayer from Holden Village, written by Marty Haugen. David Bruner is preaching this weekend at all worship services.

PRAYER: "Dear Jesus, I know that you can give me eyes to see the signs of your presence in the world, and I pray for this. But I also pray for faith in you for those times when I will not be able to see, to understand or to feel your presence in my life. Grant me the courage to persevere and to hope in things unseen. In your holy name I pray. Amen." (Adapted from a prayer by Father Henri Nouwen)

PLEDGE UPDATE:  Pledges received (as of November 24, 2009): 367 for $1,137,000. Our proposed 2010 budget of $1.8 million indicates that we still have a way to go! But there are many members from whom we have not yet received a commitment. If you have not yet turned in your pledge card for our 2010 ministry budget, please do so as soon as possible. Members of the Stewardship Ministry Team will be making follow-up phone calls next week. St. John's needs the financial support of all our members.

 Alive in Christ,

The Reverend Knight Wells
