CHRIST THE KING SUNDAY

St. John's

This weekend represents the "official" conclusion of our liturgical calendar. It is the celebration of Christ the King. In our day, we don't hear much about "kings" except as figure-heads of governments, with little or no political impact. In the Bible, we read that the people of Israel had their own experience with kings as well. Some of them did much better than others. Always, for Israel, there was the issue of who was the real Lord, in the hearts and minds of the people.  When we Christians refer to Jesus Christ as King, we are affirming that his kingdom and rule are nothing at all like those of earthly kings.

Jesus' authority comes from the truth to which he bears witness. When we, as his followers, recognize that truth, listen to him and follow him, we witness to the reality that his kingdom is eternal. It is based on love, grace and forgiveness. It is more powerful than any earthly representation. The values of his kingdom are not the values of this world. In the Gospel text for this weekend from Matthew 25, Jesus compares himself to a king who moves among his subjects to see how he is treated. We find that what is done for the "least of these" who belong to his family is truly done for him. Join us this weekend, and hear anew the true message of Jesus, who is "Christ the King."

THANKSGIVING WORSHIP

As we look forward to a Thanksgiving holiday, remember to join us on Wednesday, November 26th at 7:15 PM at St. Matthew Episcopal Church (1920 East Oakland Ave. in Bloomington, IL) for a special joint communion service with our two congregations, to celebrate Thanksgiving. Worshipping together with our brothers and sisters at St. Matthew's has been a wonderful ecumenical experience over the years. Both of our choirs will join in singing special anthems.  Pastor Elyse will be preaching. Our Thanksgiving offering is designated to support the Hopedale Growing Project which addresses the critical needs of World Hunger. Special offering envelopes can be picked up his weekend at the Welcome Centers and will also be available at St. Matthew'sSt. John's for the worship service.

PLEDGE UPDATE

Thank you to all who have generously supported “A Church Alive!” Capital Campaign. We are over the $1.6 million mark in pledges, but there are many more members of St. John's that we hope to hear from in these next weeks. In light of our current economic recession, this is a tremendous financial response and commitment from the people of St. John's, many of whom have made sacrificial pledges in order to support this important building initiative. Thank you so very much.

Have a blessed Thanksgiving. I look forward to seeing you at worship this week!

Alive in Christ,

PRAYER OF THE DAY FOR CHRIST THE KING: O God of power and might, your Son shows us the way of service, and in him we inherit the riches of your grace. Give us the wisdom to know what is right and the strength to serve the world you have made, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Sprit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
