The Legacy of the ReformationSt. John's

On this Reformation Weekend, we celebrate the continual reforming of the church, reaching back in time to the whole reformation movement begun by Martin Luther . . . a never-ending legacy of being open to God's ever-new direction and leading. It is a perspective based on our relationship to a God who loves us more than anything we can imagine. It is based on a grace-filled experience that permeates our lives. It is the legacy that Martin Luther has given to the church . . . always reforming!

This week's Gospel text from John 8 has Jesus reminding those Jews who believed in him, "If you continue in my word . . . you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free!" (John 8:31-32) The truth is that we are enslaved to sin.  And the contemporary expression of that enslavement is certainly our enslavement to the power of money in our lives. In his final chapter of Giving to God, Mark Allan Powell deals with the classic question, "How much should I give?”  It is a classic question because we all deal with it in one way or another. On this Reformation Weekend, it is good to have a grace-filled theology to help us to answer that question. Come and join us for worship this weekend and learn more.

Next weekend, we welcome Pastor David Misenheimer to our congregation. He will be preaching at our worship services. In addition, we will have our final opportunity to view the special DVD production -- "A Church Alive!"  that has been shown at a variety of "Tell the Story Events" during the month of October. This special showing will hopefully enable those who have not viewed the video to see it and fully experience "A Church Alive!"

PRAYER:  Gracious Heavenly Father, you have given us all that we have and all that we are. We humbly ask you to empty us of our own self-centeredness and fill us with the power of the Holy Spirit. Overwhelm us with your presence. Draw us closer to you. May we devote ourselves, family, possessions, and talents to your will. Place your hand of protection over our church. Give us unity in Christ. We are "A Church Alive!" living for you. May all we do, bring you glory and honor. Amen.

 St. John's

"Good News! You can be a generous person . . . Most people in most churches are financially able to contribute appropriately to their church's budget and to give sacrificially beyond 10% or more of their income. They are able to do so cheerfully and still have more than enough money to enjoy life with full appreciation for the pleasures that God's good creation (and modern conveniences) afford. If that level of giving seems outlandish to you - completely beyond reach- it may be because your current habits and patterns were not developed with faithful stewardship or generous giving in mind. If that is the case, set new goals and let God lead you toward them."  Giving to God pp. 171-172
