A Great Truth of Our Faith

St. John's

This weekend is the Sixteenth Sunday after Pentecost. The Gospel text, from Matthew 16:21-28, provides one of the most powerful messages that Jesus gives to those who would follow Him. Jesus says that in order to find our life, we must lose our lives . . . we must let it all go and then we will find our true identity. This is one of the great paradoxes of our faith . . . whatever it is that we want or desire to possess is what we must release and let go, in order to find that which is most important.

Easy to say -- hard to do.  Easy to read about and discuss -- but to actually do it, is more challenging than anything we can possibly think of. Come and discover more about this great truth of our faith.

Special Upcoming News

St. John's exciting youth and children's ministries are beginning anew this coming week.  All of our teachers, small group guides, and adult leaders will be officially installed at the Community of Joy worship services as we affirm and celebrate their collective response to God's calling, to work with our children and youth this coming year.

Also remember that our small group studies on Giving to God by Mark Allan Powell begin in September in individual homes. In addition, an inspirational sermon series, connecting the Biblical texts with the various chapters in the book also begins next weekend (September 6/7). If you have an interest or desire in becoming a part of a small group, either as a leader or simply as a participant, please be in touch with our new intern pastor, David Bruner (827-6121 Ext. 208) or by e-mail david@stjohnsbloomington.org.  David will assist in coordinating our small group ministries this coming year. In addition to the small group sessions in individual homes, St. John's pastors are offering 2 small group sessions in the Chapel on (Wednesdays @ 6:30 p.m. and Sundays @ 9:00 a.m.)  Come join us and share in this exceptional book study!

Finally, watch for an email which will include the new monthly edition of The Eagle. We will also have copies of The Eagle available at the Welcome Centers for those who wish to pick up their personal copy of our newsletter. If you would like a copy mailed to your home, please contact Gudrun Dunt at gudrun@stjohnsbloomington.org

Prayer:  O God, we thank you for your Son, who chose the path of suffering for the sake of the world. Humble us by his example, point us to the path of obedience, and give us strength to follow your commands, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

Alive in Christ,

The Rev. Knight Wells, Senior Pastor
