THE POWER OF CHRIST IN US

This week's Friday Blessings is arriving early because of the July 4th holiday this weekend. In the Second Lesson from this weekend's readings, II Corinthians 12:2-10, we read St. Paul reminding us of one of the essential faith principles that are part of our core values. Christians do not boast about their own accomplishments. If there is any boasting among us, it comes from the power of Christ that is present in our lives, particularly in times of weakness and vulnerability. When we face the difficult areas of our human experience, the problems that confront us on a personal and interpersonal level, the temptation is to rely on our own strength and ability to persevere. It is important to remember the classic affirmation of the apostle Paul . . . "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness . . . for when I am weak, then I am strong." (II Corinthians 12:9-10).

In remembering the birthday of our nation on July 4th, may we never forget that our freedom is a gift . . . a gift that has come at great cost and sacrifice because of what others have done before us. We dare not ever take it for granted. In receiving and experiencing that gift of freedom, let us not boast. Let us not boast in our greatness nor in our prominence as a nation. Let us not boast in our sacrifice or in our own efforts. Let us simply give thanks and remember the message of St. Paul, that in our weakness and inadequacies, there is strength. These words apply to our faith and also to our citizenship in this wonderful country in which we live.

  • This week marks the first full week of the 50-Days of prayer challenge given to us by Bishop Mark Hanson, as the church prepares for the Church-wide Assembly in Minneapolis next month.  Please pray each day for our Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. You can access it through this website: www.elca.org/50days

  • Progress continues on our building project. Some excellent photos are available for you to view taken by Rob Gieraltowski. Simply go to this website: http://www.stjohnsbloomington.org/jrhigh/category/churchalive/ We continue to be excited about what our A Church Alive! project will mean for our future ministries!

PRAYER: God of the covenant, in our baptism you call us to proclaim the coming of your kingdom. Give us the courage you gave the apostles, that we may faIhfully witness to your love and peace in every circumstance of life, in the name of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

Alive in Christ,

The Reverend Knight Wells
