Mercy and Grace

St. John's

This weekend's Gospel tells the story of Jesus and the people he spent time with.  There is no question that Jesus was a devout rabbi, who practiced his faith and was true to his convictions.  But we also know that he was criticized for the people with whom he associated.  These folks were typically not religious, not devout and certainly not ones who publicly practiced faith!  In fact, the devout Jews assumed that these kinds of people had no faith!

Jesus' problem with his critics was their self-righteous attitude.  While their own religious practices were very important to them, they had forgotten about the two most important aspects of faith . . . mercy and grace.  They were focused so strongly on the outward elements of religious faith, that their heart had forgotten God's grace in their own lives.  This weekend you will hear the stories of Matthew, the tax collector and the hemorrhaging woman (Matthew 9:9-13 and 18-26).  As you listen to them and Jesus' response to their situation, I pray that you will also be amazed at the grace that God has shown you in your life.

Ministry Blessings St. John's

  • This weekend is both our Staff Appreciation Weekend as well as the Graduation Breakfast Recognition.  St. John's is blessed with an excellent staff.  You will recognize them as they are all wearing "nametags."  Take an opportunity to say "thank you " to them for their ministry among us.  Also, with the number of both high school and college graduates from the congregation, this weekend is also our opportunity to celebrate this academic milestone with them as well.
  • Please pray for our children and adults attending Camp45 this weekend at Lutheran Outdoor Ministries Center (LOMC) in Oregon, IL. that they have a spiritually unique time in God's creation.
  • Our summer ministries for children start this Sunday at 9:00am.  Creation Station (PreK and K) takes place in our Noah's Ark/Nursery Area and KIDMO! (1st-5th grades) takes place in Room 200 (under the Sanctuary).
  • Remember our special Congregational Meeting this Sunday, June 8, in the Parish Life Center, immediately following worship services (approx. 11:15am).  We will be voting on the Congregational Council recommendation to continue working with Kairos Associates and conduct a Capital Campaign, to be completed in November, 2008.
  • Finally, we are looking forward to hearing our pastoral candidate, Lowell Michelson, here on Saturday, June 14, 2008, at 5:00 p.m. where he will be preaching at our Saturday Evening Worship and then be available following that service for questions and answers with St. John's members.  Both events will be held in the Parish Life Center.  We strongly encourage you to attend so that you can hear him and meet him at that time!  The special congregational meeting, scheduled for Sunday, June 22, 2008, immediately following worship services in the Parish Life Center, will focus on issuing a call for our new Associate Pastor.  Please make every effort to be present at this special meeting as well.

Prayer of the Day

O God, you are the source of life and the ground of our being.  By the power of your Spirit, bring healing to this wounded world, and raise us to the new life of your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.  Amen.

Alive in Christ,
The Rev. Knight Wells, Senior Pastor
